How to back up the Registry
Ah Yes...the mystical,
magical Registry. Repository of all that is our computer. Without it, Windows
will make your PC into little more than a really expensive paperweight. That is why
we at FTALK recommend backing up your registry along with your other regular
backups.....you are doing backups now aren't you???
Alas, the Registry is
complicated. The Registry is complex and misunderstood. And to make it even
more interesting, you can't back it up by just copying some files to a floppy because the
Registry is open when the operating system is running.
Fortunately the brainy
folks in Redmond supply you with a tool to back up the Registry called the Emergency
Rescue Utility. The ERU is supplied on the CD that Installed your Windows Operating
System.
You will find it in the
subdirectory:
\tools\misc\eru on your CD
Use it before
installing new software or on a regular basis when you do system backups. Thus,
when your machine crashes due to some feature in a piece of software you installed you
will have some additional ammunition to get you back up and running again. |
